Virtual Assistants in the Gig Economy

What is the gig economy?

The term “gig” is a noun that refers to a job, especially one as a performer or one that lasts only a short time. This includes freelancers, virtual assistants, independent contractors, project-based workers and temporary or part time hires.

The gig economy facilitates the desire of millennial virtual assistants for greater flexibility in balancing their work-life demands. No matter what motives drive virtual assistants, the popularity of the internet, with its capability for remote work, has caused the gig economy to thrive.

In the gig economy, some companies do not need to pay full-time freelancers’ benefits and some part-time freelancer’s wages are often slightly smaller than others. This allows the companies to reduce costs and only pay for the actual staff.

Virtual Assistant's Perspective

Virtual Assistants or Freelancers are in demand today. More freelancers are now growing in the gig economy. Some businesses hire freelancers to limit the cost of staffing and working space.

As to virtual assistants, in this gig economy, they considered online freelancing better than working a traditional or office-based jobs. With freelancing, they have more time to improve work and life balance. They can choose and select jobs that they would want to do. There are no fixed working hours and they can choose with whom they will work with. Virtual assistants also have more time for family and they can work and travel as well without even asking permission to the company's CEO.

Today and in the future, our world is becoming digitized. Everything is now advanced in terms of technology. Freelancing jobs and virtual assistant works can now be possible from one country to another without having a lot of cost to travel. Anything can be productive with the use of the internet, with just a click of the mouse or even with the use of mobile cell phones.

In the uprising of freelancers in a gig economy, some people with regular jobs or even full time stay-at-home moms like me would want to learn more about virtual assistant tasks and freelancing jobs. With proper training and coaching, like what Filipino Virtual Assistance Academy has instilled to their online students, even newbie freelancers can stride well in a gig economy. Being a freelancer or virtual assistant, may sound an easy job, doing data encoding, file or e-mail management and so forth. But for real, it takes really a lot of perseverance to be successful in the flowing gig economy.
